"Colors of the Gummy Tree"

Oil on canvas • 30x35 cm

I was aiming to title this piece “A Moment Before the Storm”, but had to admit to myself that the name wouldn’t resonate with the color of the skies behind (I kept the painting as much sunlit as possible). The reference photo for this piece was taken on my first hike in South Africa, in the very last brisk moment before leaving the trail and hiding from huge clouds covering the sky and announcing the impending storm breaking down any moment. It took me a moment of hesitance before deciding on to take the shot as the group was waiting. I remember, I was so fascinated by the colors on the bark of the gummy tree that I simply couldn’t leave it behind.
